about
'45RPM at Thirty Three and a Third' by Ralph Dartford with the Housekeeping Society is a commission by renowned artist Pete Mckee for his London exhibition 'Thud, Crackle and Pop'. At the exhibition you can hear the track in a specially built retro 'Sound Booth'.
Ralph Dartford on the poem About the poem "‘45RPM at Thirty Three and A Third’ is a poem about record players, my late Father, love and second chances. I first met Pete Mckee in 2011. It was in Scarborough where he was presenting a show of work based on the Seaside. I was emotionally knocked out by the work and have become a collector ever since. To be asked to write a commission with such great and inventive musicians as ‘The Housekeeping Society’ for Pete is an enormous thrill. The poem is dedicated to Jacqui Wicks who is Jackie Wilson in disguise. Enjoy!"
lyrics
I was six years old.
My dad got me a prize
For scoring an offside goal.
The Gospel truth
A record player.
Made by Bush.
The levers clunked
and its engine hummed.
Got it form a bloke
at the pigeon club.
Records too,
for hiding an untold truth.
‘Help!’, ‘Reet Petite’.
‘Anyone Who Had A Heart’,
‘Behind A Painted Smile’.
Songs that faked a truth.
As I got older
I lied and cheated.
Became unlovable.
A terrible, artful truth.
This afternoon,
I’m a middle aged man.
My girl gets me a prize,
for living a beautiful truth.
It’s a record player.
Made by Alba.
The levers clunk
and its engine hums.
Got it from a man,
Leeds Victorian Market.
Brought a record too.
'Jackie Wilson Said.’
